A Passion for Solar Excellence with over 1,000 Completed Installations
Passionate people tend to get very good at what they do.
33 years ago not many people knew about solar energy and solar hot water heating. That’s the year, 1976, when engineer and solar pioneer Gary Gerber founded the company in Berkeley. Since then the company has grown to 70 employees, completing more than 1,000 solar installations in the Bay Area. Those are the facts, but there’s more.
Engineering Expertise and a Personal Touch for Every Installation
Unlike today – with hundreds of anonymous “start-up” companies offering solar installations to homeowners and businesses – back then each interested customer spoke with Gary and his team, often standing on their lawns or on the roof of their business, learning about solar and ways to reduce their energy and heating bills.
That personal touch has not been lost.
Nor has the emphasis on superior engineering for challenging projects, commercial or residential. The company’s staff includes specialists in engineering, construction, electrical systems, CAD and financing.
A Company Culture That Believes in Solar – and Working Green
Sun Light + Power has a company culture based upon truly “walking the talk” when it comes to values.
That translates to creating living environments that serve people's intrinsic needs, supports the human spirit and preserves the planet’s resources for future generations.
Perhaps the greenest solar company in California, their fleet of trucks runs on bio-diesel. Gary commutes via an electric car. The offices use recycled furniture and carpets. Many of the staff bike to work.
Ultimately, deeds speak louder than words.
It’s no accident that Sun Light + Power is the first renewable energy contractor to have achieved certification by the Alameda County Green Business Program.

An Industry – Acknowledged Solar Pioneer and Solar Expert
The solar industry has taken note of Gary’s expertise. For two years running, 2008 & 2009, Gary Gerber has been the President of the California Solar Energy Association – CALSEIA – the industry group representing solar energy in California. Gary is also a founder of City Solar, which makes awards to cities in the Bay Area for solar installations and usage and of West Coast Green, a premier Bay Area conference that focuses on the exciting developments in global sustainability.
