Commercial Solar Energy Systems |
Solar electricity, solar hot water, and
radiant heating systems are all ideal energy alternatives
for commercial buildings.
Solar electricity and radiant heating have proven to be
effective in any number of commercial applications. A solar
hot water system reduces energy costs wherever hot water
is used, including apartment buildings, restaurants, and
laundries.
Sun Light and Power designs and installs all three types
of systems for businesses, both in new construction and
in existing structures, throughout the San Francisco Bay
Area.

Solar
Electricity (Photovoltaics)
Generating Electricity with the
Sun
The same high-level technology that provides
electrical power to satellites and space vehicles can produce
most or all of the power your business typically needs.
A photovoltaic (or “PV”) system sends any
excess power produced during the day back through the electric
meter and into the utility power grid. This causes your
electric meter to run backwards and you are credited for
this electricity. When you are using more power than you
are producing, the meter runs forward as you use up your
credited energy. With back-up batteries, your PV generator
can both furnish power for your use during the day as well
as provide for your nighttime electrical needs without
depending on the grid.
Benefits of a Photovoltaic System
Owning a PV system is now truly affordable and cost effective
thanks to recent improvements in solar cell production
efficiencies, California state rebates, state and federal
tax credits, as well as provisions in the so-called "net
metering" laws.
In addition, new solar panel designs
are now making it possible to integrate the solar electrical
modules directly into the building itself, making it
a nearly invisible component.

Solar
Thermal Systems
Heating Water with the Sun
If you're taking positive steps toward reducing
your utility expenses, installing a solar water heating
system may be a good cost-saving option for you. A solar
thermal system will greatly reduce the portion of your
utility costs that relate to water heating – gas
or electric.
NEW! Federal tax credits
equaling 30% of the cost of the system are available for
all systems activated in 2006.
Sun Light and Power designs and installs
state-of-the-art solar thermal systems for commercial hot
water applications (as well as for homes, pools, and spas),
all of which offer an opportunity for sensible green investment.
Most basic systems consist of: (1) “collectors” which
heat the water and are installed on a building’s
rooftop (but can be located on the ground), and (2) a hot
water heater, which is to be used as a storage tank and
for back-up heat during the cold months of the year. A
full-size system will typically provide most of a building’s
hot water between March and October.
Solar Thermal Makes Sense
In recent years, Solar Thermal systems have
not received the media attention of other renewables such
as photovoltaics or wind power, but this low-tech alternative
is tried and true.
We installed our first hot water system more than twenty-seven
years ago and have dozens of clients whose systems have
lasted twenty-plus years. All of our systems come with
the best warranties in the industry.
Why not begin your renewable energy revolution by installing
a simple system that simply works?

Radiant and Hydronic Heating Systems
Using
Hot Water to Heat Your Living Spaces
A hot-water radiant heating system uses
as little as half the energy of a conventional forced air
system. It has long been known in Europe that this is the
most efficient way to heat a building. In the United States
this technology is just now catching on. We at Sun Light & Power
have been designing and installing hot water heating systems
in the Bay Area for over 20 years.
Efficient
In a radiant floor system, hot water tubing
is laid within the floor itself, or installed beneath it,
and the thermal mass of the floor stores the heat. This
minimizes temperature swings and virtually eliminates cold
pockets of space. Because it uses small, well-insulated
tubing to carry the hot water, it is easy to "zone" a
system to send heat to areas that need it most. A typical
forced air system uses large, poorly insulated ducts to
carry heat throughout the building’s spaces regardless
of where you want it. Hot water boilers for radiant systems
are available with efficiencies as high as 95% to provide
efficient and reliable heating.
Healthy
By not requiring the air to be blown all
over the building, a radiant system reduces dust, annoying
drafts, allergens, and dust mites, while maintaining house
humidity at a healthy level.
