Sun Light & Power has delivered exceptional experiences to our customers for 50 years. From the early days of solar thermal, through the rise of [PV](/service/solar-photovoltaic-pv) and into the age of lithium [battery backup](/service/home-solar-batteries), we have continued to [design and build](/service/expert-solar-design-and-installation) high quality solar projects in the Bay Area. Our team of [employee-owners](/meet-our-team) serve a wide range of [commercial](/service-category/solar-your-business-leave-it-experts), [non-profit](/service-category/non-profits), municipal and [residential](/service-category/residential-solar) clients. Sun Light & Power was one of the first companies in the state to become incorporated as a [Certified Benefit Corporation](https://benefitcorporationsforgood.com/). We became a 100% employee owned (ESOP) in 2018. The 2025 ESOP Board of Directors are Gary Gerber, Barbara Gerber, Sudhir Aggarwal, Jesse Quay, Raye Martin, Steve Kuttner and Brady Cox.

In March 2025, ahead of his official retirement at the end of that year, we sat down with Sun Light & Power founder Gary Gerber to document the story of a solar industry pioneer.

Gary founded Sun Light & Power in 1976, a time when the solar industry was in its infancy.
