Sun Light & Power Achieves B Lab's Best For The World 2022!

Certified B Corp logo

We are very proud to announce that Sun Light & Power qualified for B Lab’s Best For The World 2022 in the Workers Category. Only certified Benefit Corporations (B Corps) that have achieved the highest verified scores in all five impact areas evaluated in the B Impact Assessment (BIA) qualify for this honor. SLP was compared to other US & Canada B Corps in the 50-249 employee category. This is our second Best For The World honor. In 2015, we achieved the status in the Overall Category. Visit our B Corp homepage for more details.

For several months, Nancy Summers (Director of Sales & Marketing) and Seamas Brennan (Marketing Coordinator) worked closely with our certified B Corp consultant Carolina Miranda and many of our fellow employee-owners to collect data, update policies, and calculate our carbon footprint. In April 2022, Sun Light & Power was recertified. Thanks to the joint effort, our score rose by 51.7 points to reach 137.6! This rebound was just shy of our all-time high of 140 in 2013. We are very proud of our score considering the median for ordinary businesses is 50.9 and the minimum score for B Corp qualification is 80.

Over the years, the number of B Corps have grown dramatically. Currently, over 432,000 people work for 5,250 B Corps representing 156 industries in 83 countries. What started as a revolutionary business concept is now a worldwide movement. At the same time, B Corp standards have also risen dramatically. The comprehensive recertification process examines every aspect of business operation to ensure the new standards are met. Sun Light and Power would like to thank our certified B Corp consultant, Carolina Miranda and her team at Cultivating Capital for carefully and patiently navigating our team through the process. We couldn’t have made it without you!

For nearly 46 years, Gary Gerber (SLP Founder and CEO) has dedicated himself to forward-thinking energy and business solutions that benefit our planet. In 2006, he attended a seminar given by B Lab, which was hosted by Social Venture Circle in Kennebunkport, Maine. During that inspiring hour, Gary first learned about the concept of a Benefit Corporation’s triple bottom line: planet, people and profit, which makes “business a force for good.” By 2009, Gary had joined other local businesses such as Patagonia and registered Sun Light & Power as a charter California B Corp. Thank you Gary, for seeing the sunlight and making sure we got here!
