Sun Light & Power Announces Our 2019 Sustainability Report

SLP Sustainability Report 2019

Sun Light & Power is proud to announce the release of our 2019 Sustainability Report. Since 1976, we have helped to improve the quality of life for current and future generations by designing, building, and servicing renewable energy systems. In 2009, we became a B Corp, joining other companies committed to making the way we live and work more sustainable. Ten years later, we reached another milestone when our team of 58 committed professionals completed their first year operating under an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

We also adopted a new core purpose statement in 2019: “At Sun Light & Power, we drive the total adoption of clean energy by designing, building, maintaining, and advocating for clean energy solutions so future generations inherit a healthy planet.”

Our team members installed 5.1 MW of solar photovoltaic modules and solar thermal collectors in 2019. By the end of their first year of service, these solar systems will have produced 6.72 GWh of clean renewable energy. Our 2019 solar projects alone reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from fossil fuel powered electricity generation plants by the equivalent of 5,239 tons of CO2 (tCO2e). To reach this level of CO2 emissions, one would need to burn the gasoline from nearly 63 tanker trucks (534,829 gallons). This is equal to the GHG emissions from 1,027 passenger cars over a year and amounts to driving nearly 1.8 million miles!

In 2019, Sun Light & Power’s Green Team helped raise awareness about our carbon footprint. Our commitment to lower greenhouse gas emissions was demonstrated by an intensive recycling program, paper reuse efforts, bicycle commuting, the nurturing green thumbs of the Folger Avenue Garden Club volunteers, and the increased use of renewable diesel in our fleet of trucks.

Throughout 2019, we worked carefully with many of our partners to bring renewable energy technology to many affordable housing communities. We also began designing and building residential solar + storage systems to help families and communities achieve energy resiliency in the age of extreme weather events and power shutoffs. Meanwhile, Sun Light & Power addressed climate change and the health of our planet in a series of blog posts designed to educate the public and inspire environmental activism.
